Operating Ranges of Mesoscale Numerical Models and Meteorological Wind Tunnels for the Simulation of Sea and Land Breezes

چکیده
The operating ranges of mesoscale numerical models and meteorological wind tunnels for seaand land-breeze simulations are defined in this paper based on a review of the theoretical and practical limitations of these two approaches. Numerical-model operating ranges are limited by the choice of governing equations, the numerical methods used to solve the governing equations, the scales of the surface or atmospheric forcing and the atmospheric response, the specified grid resolution and domain size, and the available computer resources. Wind-tunnel operating ranges are limited by the dimensions of the simulated circulations and of the tunnel itself, the tunnel flow speed and turbulence characteristics, the temperature gradients within the tunnel, the lack of Coriolis force and moist processes, and the characteristics of the measurement instrumentation. The operating ranges of these two simulation methods are shown to overlap. In this common range, results of simulations from both approaches can be compared so as to strengthen the validity of the results and to help in the development and improvement of parameterizations of physical processes in numerical models. In addition, the coupling of meteorological wind tunnels and mesoscale numerical models offers a larger range of operating conditions than can be achieved by either approach alone. Together, they can be used in a hybrid form to predict atmospheric conditions at the scale of a few meters for complex terrain (e.g., buildings, hills, etc.) within larger mesoscale atmospheric flow regimes. In the case of sea and land breezes, the sea-land transition zone and coastal internal boundary layer can be studied using both approaches.

Variations of Sulfur Dioxide Deposition Velocity Resulting from Terrain-forced Mesoscale Circulations
Variations of dry deposition velocity for S02 due to terrain-forced mesoscale circulations have been explored for northeast Colorado and south Florida. A mesoscale numerical model was used to obtain the wind and turbulence data needed to calculate the deposition velocities. Computations were performed both with and without consideration of observed land use characteristics. The results indicate...
متن کاملAccounting for Pliem-Xiu and NOAH Module to Simulate Dust: A Case of Western Areas of Ahwaz
Extended abstract 1- INTRODUCTION In the arid and semi-arid areas of Asia, dust storms occur frequently. Much progress has been made in the monitoring modeling and prediction of Asian dust storms. Dust emission is caused by wind erosion in the sensitive areas. Wind erosion is described as the transportation of soil particles by means of the wind. Soil Surface moisture is one of the most i...
متن کاملImpact of meteorological data resolution on the forecasted ozone concentrations during the ESCOMPTE IOP2a and IOP2b
During the summer 2001, several photo-oxidant pollution episodes were documented around Marseilles-Fos-Berre in the South of France within the framework of the ESCOMPTE campaign. The site is composed of large cities (Marseilles, Aix, and Toulon), significant factories (Fos-Berre), a dense road network, and extensive rural area. Both biogenic and anthropogenic emissions are thus significative. L...
متن کاملSimulation and Prediction of Wind Speeds: A Neural Network for Weibull
Abstract. Wind as a resource of renewable energy has obtained an important share of the energy market already. Therefore simulation and prediction of wind speeds is essential for both, for engineers and energy traders. In this paper we analyze the surface wind speed data from three prototypic locations: coastal region (Rotterdam), undulating forest landscape few 100 m above sea level(Kassel), ...

Wind is the carrier of pollutants and any other gaseous or particle matters in the atmosphere. Stable atmosphere with low wind provides favourable conditions for high contamination of pollutants in urban areas. The importance of mesoscale atmospheric flows in air pollution dispersion has been recognized in the past three decades and has been the focus of intensive research both observational ...
